I pulled out of my driveway, drove to the end of the street, and voilà—the whole world had changed. Bright white and yellow lines stretched out before me. Parking spaces and turn lanes reappeared after a long winter break.
I smiled as I passed the crews working diligently to reclaim our roads—and laughed as I found myself with enough room to turn right onto Highway 55 at FoggLifter Café. There was finally space to slide between the sidewalk and the line of cars turning left.
As I pulled into the office, I felt happy and light. For me, paint week is the official start of summer. The temps are usually reasonable, I'm typically wearing shorts, and I know when the paint starts showing up, our busy summer season isn't far behind. It's a not-so-subtle reminder to enjoy those last few left turns at FoggLifter and soak up the relatively quiet downtown.
It won't be long before my downstairs neighbor, Ice Cream Alley, starts playing Beatles music and crowds start queuing for their favorite summer treat.
I can't wait. And I bet you're in the same boat. So, take a moment this weekend to enjoy our little town as it starts to wake up from winter's slumber. It might be a good time to get those first mountain bike rides in at Bear Basin (freshly cleaned and spruced by our good friends at CIMBA) or sneak in a hike in a blessedly quiet Ponderosa State Park. You know the drill.
And, while you're shaking the rust off your summer activities, decide how you want to get your copy of McCall Life—you can pick the digital edition or get the print issue mailed to your house. Whichever you choose, you can subscribe here.
If you want to grab a free copy, they'll be available in our newsstand boxes outside Ice Cream Alley, FoggLifter, and North Fork Coffee or at any advertiser office/shop. The summer issue hits June 15. We can't wait for you to see what we've done—it’s the best issue yet, and that's saying something.
See you out there!
