My daughter grabbed my hand, her little mitten swallowed by mine, as we slowly circled our backyard ice rink lit only by the glow of the moon and the thousands of stars circling over our little slice of the world. As we glided across the ice, she gently guided me this way and that, never being too pushy, just gentle pressure and may be a slight change of direction to indicate where she wanted to go next.

I followed her lead, marveling at the magic this little spot of ice created. As we circled in silence, it began to snow. Soft, gentle flakes lazily dropped to the ice before they were pushed into little piles by our skates. Eventually, she navigated me to the center of the rink and laid down. I laid down next to her.

Together, we stared through the broken clouds at the moon, working to catch the falling flakes on our tongues. It wasn’t long before the rest of the clan joined us—the whole family laying in the middle of the rink, forming a loose circle with our heads all touching, catching snowflakes on our tongues, and laughing when we caught one in the eye.

As fall rounds the corner to winter, I inevitably remember this special moment and longingly look forward to the falling of snow and the special times it will bring to our family and yours this coming winter.

This issue is dedicated to all-things winter—fun stories of folks who spent their life creating opportunities for others to enjoy the snow and a slew of articles on folks just going about their business in town. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, I hope you find a slice of time to enjoy the snow magic we create regularly here in McCall.

Of course, I hope you also have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

See you out there,
