I walked into the garage and stepped into a frenzy of activity. My second oldest daughter was pulling camping gear off the shelf under the direction of her new high school friends.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“We’re going to camp on an island tonight. We’ll be back tomorrow morning.”
I paused. We were new to town, and I didn’t know any of the girls she was heading off with. At the same time, I recognized this was why we moved here.
“Is there cell coverage out there?” I asked the girls.
“No,” said one of the friends, “but we’ll be OK. We do this a lot.”
